Surgery tomorrow Nov. 12th, 2007 @ 02:09 pm
Hi everyone,

Taking this moment out of my day to just kind of give an update. A while back I mentioned that my right eye surgery would be happening in November. Well, a month and a half has turned into tomorrow.

I can't express my state of mind. I'm somewhere between anxious, nervous and nauseous. I don't want to get my hopes up but I don't want to sell myself short either. Regardless, I will be able to see better tomorrow than I have ever seen. One eye has changed the world for me and has turned me into a staring, admiring idiot standing at the side of sidewalks and in front of signs.

The question is what will the world be like tomorrow when the eye I actually use gets, more, fixed? This is probably one of the most important things to happen to me. This means more to me than graduating or a job. What if I don't like what I see? :)

Thank you for your well wishes and support. Hopefully see you soon.

» Surgery update
Hi everyone,

I just wanted to post a little something about the surgery yesterday. It started a bit too late, and went a little long, but it was a smashing success. I now have a sharper and brighter image in my left eye than I do in my right! Of course, coming with that is double vision and periodic headaches while my brain quite literately re-learns how to see with the new resources. I had to pop-out the left elnse in my glasses and the sharpness and color is better in my left even with that than in my right. Time will only tell how good it will get.

As for the right eye, the doctor is happy now and he says we can do my right eye's lense replacement "at any time I'm comfortable". So I am working on what times would be good for it now. I may have the best vision I've ever had by Thanksgiving or even Halloween!

More to come. Meanwhile, some pictures posted to my Flickr account of past excursions. I don't take many pictures, hope you enjoy none-the-less.

Well, the time has come. Tomorrow is cataract surgery. The procedure starts at around 10:15. Highly ventilated surgery robe here I come.

The procedure will be to replace the lense in my left eye. I'll be out of work for three days, maybe more if necessary. And when all is said and done, I should have the best distance vision I've ever had in my left eye. All this takes care of is the cloudyness. The basic problems still remain, but at least the fixture that focuses it all will be better. Mom is here at my place until Thursday or really whenever she'd like to leave. :)

Wish me luck!

A month has passed. The days and nights seem to take hours, but I continue to have hope for leaving my small home away from home. My days have devolved into a routine of lighting fires, fishing and making sandcastles.

I wish to remain positive, but I simply cannot make a good sandclastle. They always seem to cave in on me...

A monkey (I've named him Robert) living in the tree above my head tried attacking me with a coconut. After chasing him, I decided to work a bit on a makeshift raft. Do you ever have the feeling that you are being watched? It would seem I long too much for my lost love. I can see her watching me over my shoulder whilst I build. Perhaps the lack of water has made me delerious. Still, the raft may be my ticket off of this island.

I had my first octopus to eat today. My gosh, I understand why the Japanese love this animal!

I have been stranded on this island for a week now. I sit here in my shorts and my captain's hat waiting for the future to come to me. I have coconuts and whatever I manage to haul from the sea to eat. You would think that boots aren't very tasty, but you would be surprised what a little fire will do. For those who find themselves in the same circumstance as me, please be sure to avoid the starfish...

The natives of my horribly small island have left me a number of things I can work with -- all precariously stocked behind the only lonely tree on my prison. What ever happened to them? Where could they have vanished? Without a trace their only reminders to visitors and the outside world, should I ever leave, are behind that single god-forsaken coconut tree.

Today I sent out my first S.O.S. note out. I was saddened to find it returned to me. Not losing hope, I tossed it back out into the ocean to see what merciful Poseidon would do with it.

Perhaps I will write more if I have not yet gone mad from this small island, the center of my new life, perhaps until my last days.
